The Senate Environmental Resources and Energy Committee will meet on May 6 to consider House Bill 2017, which proposes amendments to the Radiation Protection Act. The meeting is scheduled for “Off the Floor” in the Rules Committee Conference Room.

House Bill 2017, introduced by Giral, seeks to amend provisions related to definitions within the act and update regulations regarding nuclear facility and transport fees. The bill aims to address aspects of radiation safety oversight by revising existing statutes.

Gene Yaw chairs the Senate Environmental Resources and Energy Committee. Yaw has also served as vice chairman of the Senate Urban Affairs and Housing Committee, according to the official website. He represents areas in Bradford, Lycoming, Sullivan, Tioga, and Union counties.

Yaw has contributed significantly outside his legislative duties. He provided general counsel to the Pennsylvania College of Technology for more than two decades and has chaired its board since 2013. In addition, he received recognition as Lycoming County Solicitor of the Year in 2004. His community involvement includes coaching Little League Baseball and youth soccer, according to the official website.

The upcoming committee meeting reflects ongoing efforts by state lawmakers to review regulatory frameworks affecting public health and safety. Observers will be watching how proposed changes may impact oversight of nuclear facilities in Pennsylvania.
