The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced  a nearly $10 million state investment in projects at eight Pennsylvania airports for facility improvements, infrastructure preservation, and development. The Shapiro administration said supporting safe, reliable infrastructure while growing the Commonwealth’s economy is a key priority.
According to PennDOT, Pennsylvania’s aviation industry employs over 226,000 people, provides nearly $12.5 billion in payroll and employment benefits, and has a $34 billion annual economic impact. Regional airports also facilitate services such as air cargo and freight and enhance operations for police and law enforcement, emergency medical services, firefighting, and disaster response.
“Pennsylvania’s airports connect communities and move goods and people around the world,” said PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll. “These investments are another example of Governor Josh Shapiro’s focus on maintaining our infrastructure while also expanding business opportunities.”
The funds will support several projects across the state: Pittsburgh International Airport will receive $1,544,316 for construction of a field maintenance fuel system; Quakertown Airport will receive $487,500 to rehabilitate and upgrade electrical service for two hangars; Doylestown Airport will receive $402,500 for continued rehabilitation of hangars; New Garden Airport will receive $954,000 to construct a 10-unit T-hangar; Erie International Airport will receive $171,511 to acquire three vehicles for airport safety; Wilkes-Barre Wyoming Valley Airport will receive $2.97 million to expand taxiways and taxilanes for construction of two 12-unit T-hangars; Williamsport Regional Airport will receive $593,832 to rehabilitate a maintenance hangar; Heritage Field Airport will receive $2,876,340 to construct a corporate hangar.
The projects are funded by the state Capital Budget through the Aviation Transportation Assistance Program supported by bonds. More information about transportation initiatives can be found at the organization’s press release.
