The Shapiro Administration has added 339 new truck parking spaces across Pennsylvania, aiming to create at least 1,200 spots by the end of 2026. This initiative uses existing Commonwealth property to tackle a long-standing issue. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has rapidly opened these spaces at 24 locations statewide, including Interstate on-ramps and weigh stations used for motor carrier safety enforcement by the Pennsylvania State Police.

PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll emphasized the importance of safe parking options for commercial drivers to comply with federal rest requirements. “As a commercial driver’s license holder, I know how critical safe parking options are for the people who keep goods moving to and through Pennsylvania,” Carroll said. He added that the department is exploring additional ways to increase parking availability.

Before the end of 2025, PennDOT established truck parking spots in various counties, including Blair, Butler, Chester, Erie, Franklin, Fulton, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Northampton, Pike, Schuylkill, Snyder, Washington, and York. These designated spots are located on Interstate on-ramps without sight distance or safety concerns and other Commonwealth-owned sites.

A new “Public Truck Parking” feature was introduced on www.511PA.com and its smartphone application in October. This tool displays current truck parking options and updates as new locations become available. The expansion aligns with recommendations from a 2023 study by the Pennsylvania State Transportation Advisory Committee (TAC), which suggested repurposing state-owned surplus properties for truck parking.

The Truck Parking Task Force was formed as part of PennDOT’s efforts to collaborate with regional partners along key corridors identified in the TAC study. The department also engages with the trucking industry and local municipalities to advance potential solutions.

Motorists can access real-time road conditions via www.511PA.com or its app for iPhone and Android devices. This service offers traffic delay warnings and weather forecasts among other features.
