The Pittsburgh Steelers returned to the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex for minicamp on June 2, focusing on integrating new players and adapting to a revised defensive approach. Safety DeShon Elliott, who missed most of the previous season due to injuries, said he is ready for a fresh start. “I’ve been hurt a couple of times,” said Elliott. “First six months is hard, and the last three is pretty easy, so I’m good now. I had a lot going on last year. Was on the field, off the field. I’m just happy to be able to play ball again.”
Elliott emphasized his participation throughout voluntary organized team activities and minicamp as essential preparation under the new coaching staff and playbook. He said, “It’s a new playbook, but we have a lot of smart guys… everything started coming together when it comes to the basics of the defense.” The secondary includes both returning players such as Joey Porter Jr., Jalen Ramsey, and Brandin Echols, as well as new addition Darnell Savage.
Porter commented on changes in coaching style: “They’re gonna let us travel (follow a specific receiver regardless of formation during a given game). They’re gonna let us do what we do as corners… The biggest part is to just let us play our game and not put us in a box.” Porter also reflected on his performance last season: “I feel like I was an elite guy since I’ve been in this league. I’m happy that I’m getting the respect that I feel like I’m owed.” Head coach Mike McCarthy addressed contract situations by saying, “There’s a personal side to this. There’s a professional side to this… When those things occur, I really, frankly just put that into a business category.”
The Steelers announced they signed safety Darnell Savage to a one-year contract ahead of minicamp. Savage has played 88 games over seven NFL seasons with teams including Green Bay Packers—who drafted him in 2019—Jacksonville Jaguars, Washington Commanders, and Buffalo Bills. His career statistics include 10 interceptions (one returned for touchdown), 367 tackles (273 solo), 40 passes defensed, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and one sack.
Savage’s previous seasons saw him starting games across multiple franchises with consistent contributions in tackles and turnovers; he was named to the Pro Football Writers of America All-Rookie team after his first year with Green Bay.
In conjunction with signing Savage, Pittsburgh released defensive back Makari Paige from their roster.
The Pittsburgh Steelers are affiliated with the National Football League as one of its member franchises based in Pittsburgh; they have achieved six Super Bowl championships throughout their history, according to the official website. The organization also recognizes player achievements through its Hall of Honor Museum at Acrisure Stadium, which features artifacts commemorating significant contributors such as Terry Bradshaw and Joe Greene according to their official website.
