The Pittsburgh Steelers announced on Jun. 3 the signing of safety Darnell Savage to a one-year contract.
Savage, who has played in 88 games with 82 starts over seven seasons in the National Football League, joins the Steelers after spending time with the Green Bay Packers from 2019 to 2023, as well as brief stints with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Washington Commanders, and Buffalo Bills during the 2024 and 2025 seasons. He was originally drafted by the Packers in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft as the 21st overall selection.
Throughout his career, Savage has recorded ten interceptions for a total of 141 yards and one touchdown. His statistics also include 367 tackles—273 of them solo—40 passes defensed, eleven tackles for loss, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and one sack. In his most recent season split among three teams in 2025, he appeared in twelve games and registered twenty-five tackles (eighteen solo), three passes defensed, and a forced fumble. The previous year with Jacksonville saw him start all thirteen games he played in and finish with fifty-one tackles (forty-one solo), six passes defensed, two tackles for loss, and an interception.
Savage’s final season with Green Bay included starting all ten games he played during that regular season before intercepting Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott for a sixty-four-yard touchdown return—the fourth longest interception return in Packers postseason history—in an NFC Wild Card game. Earlier highlights include being named to the Pro Football Writers of America All-Rookie team after his debut season.
Before entering professional football, Savage played college football at Maryland where he appeared in forty-six games with thirty-seven starts. He finished his collegiate career with one hundred eighty-two tackles (one hundred thirty-nine solo), eight interceptions—including two returned for touchdowns—and twenty-two passes defensed.
In a related move on Jun. 3, Pittsburgh released defensive back Makari Paige from its roster.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have achieved notable success historically through six Super Bowl championships and recognition via their Hall of Honor program honoring figures such as Terry Bradshaw and Joe Greene; they also feature a Hall of Honor Museum at Acrisure Stadium displaying artifacts from team history, according to their official website.
