WAYNE COUNTY: Sheriff Announces Plans to Retire after 20 Years

Happy retirement

Wayne County issued the following announcement on Nov 25.

Wayne County Sheriff Mark Steelman announced his intention to retire after a 20-year tenure as an elected official.

“This was an extremely difficult decision to make. I have been truly blessed to have been elected to this position by the citizens of Wayne County. I have enjoyed enormous support by both political parties, which was humbling and appreciated,” Steelman said in a letter to the Wayne County Commissioners.

Although he will be retiring as Sheriff, he plans to remain involved in the law enforcement community, noting he has accepted the position of Assistant Director of Safety and Security with the Wayne Highlands School District.

Sheriff Steeman credited the great staff serving in his office for the enhancements in Counrthouse aand County security, the creation of the office’s first K-9 Unit and the successful Cram-the-Cruiser Holiday Toy Drive. The office also expanded its public services to include fingerprinting.

He said his efforts as Sheriff were made easier by the help and assistance of Chief Deputy, Chris Rosler who will assume the role of Acting Sheriff. This assumption of duties will guarantee a seamless transition and ensure the office will carry on its normal daily functions without interruption.

“Throughout my tenure at the courthouse, “ Steelman said, “I have had the pleasure of working with exceptional employees, elected officials, attorneys, and various other professionals. All of whom I will deeply and greatly miss.

“I am looking forward to serving our community again in this new role and help keep and maintain a safe environment for the students of the Wayne Highlands School District. “
