Desales University issued the following announcement on Nov. 23.

A record number of students, faculty, and staff helped to usher in the holiday season on campus.

Students in the IDEAS Club and Student Government Association joined forces to host a Christmas tree lighting ceremony on the campus mall on the same night as DUCsgiving, the University’s annual Thanksgiving dinner.

“We’re kicking off the season the right way. DeSales has such a homey feel. We wanted to have one event that everybody can come to and feel welcomed.”

Matthew Steptoe ’22, president of the IDEAS Club

Mark Jannuzzi ’22, senior class president, offered the opening prayer during the tree lighting, while Emma Kirchner ’25 read a Christmas poem. The ceremony also featured special performances by the DSU Chorale and the dance team.

Students snacked on holiday cookies, donuts, and hot chocolate, while Frankie the Bulldog, the University’s mascot, dressed as Santa and posed for photos. The annual tree lighting ceremony started in 2018 but had to be put on hold last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
