Troy Rivetti has been appointed as the United States Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania. The appointment was made by Attorney General Pamela Bondi on January 28, 2026. Rivetti was officially sworn in by United States District Court Judge J. Nicholas Ranjan.
Rivetti has led the office since January 2025 after the resignation of former U.S. Attorney Eric Olshan. He first served as Acting United States Attorney until November 2025 and then continued as First Assistant United States Attorney, a position he previously held before becoming Acting U.S. Attorney.
Rivetti’s tenure at the Department of Justice spans nearly three decades, during which he has held several leadership roles within the U.S. Attorney’s Office. His previous positions include Acting United States Attorney from February to June 2023 and Chief of the Criminal Division from 2019 to 2021. He joined the office in 1997.
His work as a federal prosecutor has focused mainly on violent crime cases, including large-scale drug trafficking and firearms offenses. Notably, Rivetti co-led the investigation and prosecution in United States v. Robert Bowers, related to what is recognized as the deadliest antisemitic mass shooting in U.S. history. He served as first chair for the trial team throughout jury selection, trial, and sentencing phases.
Rivetti holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Dickinson College and a Juris Doctor from Georgetown University. After law school, he worked for five years as a litigation associate at a Pittsburgh law firm and later clerked for two years for Judge D. Brooks Smith.
