U.S. Representative Daniel Philip Meuser said on May 6 that the Democrat leadership’s shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) put perceived political gain over national security. The statement was made in response to the recently ended 76-day partial shutdown of DHS, which affected agencies such as the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) ahead of the nation’s 250th anniversary.

The prolonged funding lapse has drawn attention due to its impact on federal operations and public safety. According to Meuser, “Fortunately, Secretary Mullin and the many dedicated agents at the TSA and other Homeland Security agencies stepped up during the chaos that the shutdown created.” U.S. Rep. Meuser made his remarks in an X post that included his appearance on Varney & Co., addressing how federal agents continued critical operations despite a lapse in appropriations, according to the congressman’s official account.

More than 1,100 TSA officers quit their jobs during the partial DHS shutdown, with attrition accelerating in its final weeks and airport staffing shortages leading to longer security lines and operational strain at major hubs nationwide during this period, according to Politico.

The 76-day partial shutdown marked the longest agency-specific funding lapse in U.S. history, affecting not only TSA but also agencies like the Coast Guard and FEMA until President Trump signed a funding bill on April 30. The impasse centered on disagreements over appropriations and immigration enforcement priorities, according to CBS News.

Meuser has represented Pennsylvania’s Ninth Congressional District since 2019 and serves on both the House Financial Services Committee and House Small Business Committee, focusing on regulatory reform, economic growth, and constituent services for Central Pennsylvania families and businesses, according to his official website.
