The University of Pittsburgh recognized its outstanding graduating seniors at the 2026 Senior Distinguished Awards Convocation held on May 1. The ceremony included the presentation of Pitt’s highest undergraduate honors, the Emma W. Locke Memorial Award and the Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) Senior of the Year Award.

These awards highlight students who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, scholarship, and service during their time at the university.

Brandon P. Hale received this year’s ODK Senior of the Year Award. Hale is a student in Pitt’s Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences and David C. Frederick Honors College. He served as president and vice president of programming for the Frederick Honors College Student Council, president of MEDLIFE at Pitt, and associate director of Yale School of Medicine’s Grey Matter Project. After graduation, Hale will work as a teaching assistant for the Center for Latin American Studies’ Seminar and Field Program in San José, Costa Rica, before joining the Peace Corps in Guatemala as a youth development program coordinator for two years. He plans to attend medical school with an aim to become a pediatric neurologist.

The Emma W. Locke Memorial Award was established in 1946 by Charles A. Locke in memory of his mother and is considered Pitt’s highest undergraduate honor for exceptional scholarship, character, and leadership among seniors nominated by deans from each undergraduate school.

This year’s recipient is Satyaj Bhargava from Pitt’s Swanson School of Engineering and Frederick Honors College. Bhargava is a 2025 Barry M. Goldwater Scholar who has authored several peer-reviewed papers covering topics such as brain vasculature imaging and wet lab research in MechanoBiology Lab, as well as developing DavaLo—a medication management system intended for underserved hospitals in India. During his gap year after graduation, Bhargava will serve as a clinical research assistant at the Pediatric Spine Department at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City; he is also lead percussionist with the Pitt Symphony Orchestra, a National Collegiate Honors Council Student of the Year nominee, and a Swanson School University Scholar.

The achievements recognized through these awards reflect both academic excellence and community involvement among University of Pittsburgh graduates.
