State Sen. Gene Yaw and State Rep. Clint Owlett announced on May 12 that nearly $1.08 million has been awarded to Westfield Borough for a sidewalk replacement project.
The funding will support the construction of new sidewalks, curbing, ramps, and crosswalk access along the southern side of Main Street from Riverside Park to the eastern border of the borough. The goal is to improve pedestrian safety and update infrastructure in the area.
“The current sidewalks are in disrepair, which creates a safety hazard for anyone walking in that area,” Owlett said. “Westfield is a wonderfully welcoming community, and I’m pleased to work with Sen. Yaw to support this much-needed improvement to the town.”
“Today’s award will improve pedestrian safety and modernize aging infrastructure in Westfield Borough for years to come,” Yaw said. “I was pleased to work alongside Rep. Owlett in supporting this funding.”
The grant comes from the 2025 Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside (TASA) of the Federal Highway Administration’s Surface Block Grant Program. TASA provides funding for transportation alternatives such as pedestrian and bicycle facilities, projects improving non-driver access to public transportation, community improvement activities, environmental mitigation efforts, trails serving transportation purposes, and safe routes to school.
Owlett draws on his background growing up on a family dairy farm in Middlebury Center and continues his involvement with agriculture through service on boards such as the Center for Dairy Excellence and Pennsylvania College of Technology, according to the official website. He represents Pennsylvania’s 68th Legislative District in Northern Tier communities where he advocates for rural areas and agricultural priorities.
