State Sen. Gene Yaw and State Rep. Clint Owlett announced on May 12 that nearly $1.08 million has been awarded to Westfield Borough for a sidewalk replacement project.
The funding will be used to build new sidewalks, curbing, ramps, and crosswalk access along the southern side of Main Street from Riverside Park to the eastern border of the borough. The goal is to improve safety and update infrastructure in the area.
“The current sidewalks are in disrepair, which creates a safety hazard for anyone walking in that area,” Owlett said. “Westfield is a wonderfully welcoming community, and I’m pleased to work with Sen. Yaw to support this much-needed improvement to the town.” Yaw said, “Today’s award will improve pedestrian safety and modernize aging infrastructure in Westfield Borough for years to come. I was pleased to work alongside Rep. Owlett in supporting this funding.”
The money comes from the 2025 Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside (TASA) of the Federal Highway Administration’s Surface Block Grant Program. TASA provides funds for projects such as pedestrian and bicycle facilities, improved non-driver access to public transportation, community improvement activities, environmental mitigation efforts, trails serving transportation purposes, and safe routes to school.
Yaw has contributed broadly through public service roles including coaching Little League Baseball and youth soccer; he also received recognition as Lycoming County Solicitor of the Year in 2004; provided general counsel for more than two decades at Pennsylvania College of Technology where he currently chairs its board; chaired the Senate Environmental Resources and Energy Committee while serving as vice chairman of the Senate Urban Affairs and Housing Committee; and represents areas across Bradford, Lycoming, Sullivan, Tioga, and Union counties—according to the official website.
