The York County GOP has censured Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) for his decision to vote for the conviction of former President, Donald Trump. The committee reached a consensus on Saturday.
“For the past four years Sen. Toomey sat silently as a hyper-partisan Democrat Congress relentlessly attacked President Trump, impeaching him twice on fabricated charges,” said Republican state Rep. Dawn Keefer, The Epoch Times reported. “Given his recent support of the second unconstitutional impeachment effort against a president who is no longer in office the York County Republican Committee has reached the limits of its frustration.”
Toomey, who has since announced his retirement in 2022 after his current term, defended his support for saying there was enough evidence leveled against Trump.
“It’s important as a party to be able to distinguish … the terrific successes of this administration, the fact that the president did stand up to and against some bad policies and some bad trends,” Toomey said, as reported by The Epoch Times. “Those things can be true, and it can also be true that his behavior after the election became completely unacceptable.”
There was a 57-43 Senate vote to find Trump guilty on Saturday. Trump was being blamed for the Jan. 6 insurrection.
Seven Republicans joined Democrats in support of convicting Trump, besides Toomey, Sens. Richard Burr (N.C.), Mitt Romney (Utah), Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), Bill Cassidy (La.), Ben Sasse (Neb.), and Susan Collins (Maine) voted. Cassidy has also subsequently been censured by the Louisiana GOP.
