On Monday in recognition of Memorial Day, Gov. Tom Wolf ordered that all commonwealth flags on Pennsylvania facilities, public buildings and grounds be flown at half-staff.
The order aligned with the United States Flag Code, a recent press release from the governor's office said. The U.S. and Pennsylvania flags were to be lowered to half-staff from sunrise until noon on Memorial Day. This was to honor those who have served the nation.
"Each Memorial Day, we honor the brave individuals who serve in our armed forces, and commemorate the sacrifices of those who gave up their lives in service of our nation," Wolf said in the release. "This year, let us all come together to celebrate the freedoms that we all hold dear, and give thanks to those who fight to preserve those freedoms."
Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day. It is a federal holiday to mourn United States military personnel who died while serving in the U.S. armed forces. From 1868 to 1970, the holiday was observed on May 30. It is currently observed on the last Monday of May.
The governor invited all Pennsylvanians to join in and lower their flags to half-staff as well.
