Rieber Tosses Gem; Bullpen Coughs up Nine-Run Lead in King's Series Opener

Srg 1358

Desales University issued the following announcement on Apr. 22.

Junior Ryan Rieber struck out 11 batters in seven innings but the bullpen was unable to hold a 10-1 lead as King's College rallied for 10 runs over the final two innings to open the weekend series with an 11-10 over the DeSales University baseball team in MAC Freedom action on Friday afternoon.

DeSales had complete control of this game over the seven and a half innings scoring runs in the first, third, fourth, sixth, seventh, and eighth innings to take a 10-1 lead entering the bottom of the eighth inning.  Senior Liam Kile had three hits and two RBIs, first-year Patrick Kusters scored three times, senior Robert Lamm had two hits, two runs, and two RBIs, and senior Hunter Spalt had two hits to help DSU take its nine-run lead.

Rieber was dominant over the first seven innings allowing just three hits, allowing just one runner to score and only one more runner to reach second base, and struck out 11, while walking just one.

Senior Will Manley took over in the eighth and after getting the lead off man on a fly out, walked three of the next four hitters and allowed a three-run home run that pulled the Monarchs within 10-5 before first-year Mike Romano got out of the jam stranding the bases loaded.

After the Bulldogs went in order for the first time all game in the ninth, King's opened the bottom of the ninth with six straight singles to get within 10-8.  First-year Frank Parrotti entered the game and got a fly out before a wild pitch made it 10-9 and put the winning run on second base.

An intentional walk loaded the bases setting up a force at every base but the Monarchs tied on a hit by a pitch and won the game on a bases loaded walk on a 3-2 pitch giving KC the improbable comeback win.

Romano took the loss allowing six runs over 1/3 inning pitched.

These two teams will wrap-up the weekend series tomorrow at Weiland Park with the doubleheader slated to begin at 1:00 pm.
