During an appearance on Newsmax’s "Wake Up America," Dr. Mehmet Cengiz Öz, known professionally as "Dr. Oz", labeled his Democrat opponent in Pennsylvania's U.S. Senate race, John Fetterman, as “the most pro-murderer candidate in America right now," Mediaite reported.

Dr. Oz pointed to Fetterman's advocacy for releasing convicted criminals, the story said. Specifically, he cited a case involving a man who was charged with murdering his girlfriend's mother.

“He is the most pro-murderer candidate in America right  now, and it’s stunning when you hear the specific cases," Dr. Oz said. "Times when he has actually lobbied to release first-degree murderers."

In cities such as Philadelphia, "murder is a major problem because it’s higher than it has ever been before," Dr. Oz said.

He has accused Fetterman of seeking to “release one-third of prisoners and eliminate life sentences for murderers” after the Democrat indicated his intent to reduce prison populations. Dr. Oz and others also have questioned whether Fetterman's health will be an obstacle in holding office. Fetterman suffered a stroke on the day of the primary election, Fox News reported.

Dr. Oz earned a bachelor's degree from Harvard University before earning a joint M.D./M.B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and Wharton Business School, according to Ballotpedia. He is the Republican candidate seeking to replace incumbent Sen. Pat Toomey, a Republican who is retiring. Dr. Oz and Fetterman will face off in November's general election. Fetterman currently serves as Pennsylvania lieutenant governor.
