In an attempt to make the redistricting process "fair and transparent," Gov. Tom Wolf (D) announced the establishment of the Pennsylvania Redistricting Advisory Council to help guide him through redrawing congressional legislative boundaries.
The General Assembly will have to approve the governor's redistricting plan later this year. Wolf said the new legislative map will have an impact on each individual resident of the state and their communities for the next ten years.
"We must bring more fairness and transparency to the redistricting process, so every Pennsylvanian is assured their voice is heard," Wolf said, according to the Official Pennsylvania Government Website. "I have long believed that gerrymandering is wrong, and politicians should not use the redistricting process to choose their own voters. Our commonwealth and our nation were founded on the ideals that voters freely select their own leaders."
Wolf signed the executive order that created the Pennsylvania Redistricting Advisory Council on Sept. 13. The advisory council will be made up of six redistricting experts to assist in the process.
In order to allow voters to have a say in the process, the Wolf administration launched a website where the public can submit their own proposed district maps, highlight communities of interest and provide other general comments to the advisory committee.
