On August 1st, Congressman Lloyd Smucker hosted a Main Street Tax Team roundtable in York County. The event brought together small business owners to discuss the effects of federal tax policies on their operations. A significant focus was on the Small Business Deduction (Section 199A), which is set to expire in 2025 unless Congress intervenes.
Marci Bittner and Wendy Bittner, owners of LOSHAW Thermal Technology, LLC., participated in the discussion. Melissa Morgan, NFIB Pennsylvania Assistant State Director, emphasized the importance of this deduction for small businesses. "We are thrilled that small business owners had an opportunity to share their story directly to Rep. Smucker," she said. "The Small Business Deduction has allowed small business owners to further invest in their business, their employees, and their community. It is crucial that Congress passes the Main Street Tax Certainty Act and make the deduction permanent."
The deduction allows small businesses organized as pass-throughs—such as S corporations, LLCs, sole proprietorships, or partnerships—to deduct up to 20% of qualified business income. Marci Bittner highlighted the benefits of engaging directly with lawmakers: "Having a seat at the table with Congressman Smucker was a great experience for us as small business owners," she stated. "Taxes are always a complex issue for small businesses, so it was helpful that we could tell Rep. Smucker exactly how federal taxes impact our day-to-day business operations."
There is a call to action urging Pennsylvania's small businesses to advocate for the passage of the Main Street Tax Certainty Act before the expiration of the deduction in 2025.
