U.S. Representative Lloyd Smucker of Pennsylvania's 11th district recently participated in the National Federation of Independent Business's (NFIB) Small Business Rundown podcast. During the session, Rep. Smucker discussed the implications of the 20% Small Business Deduction alongside NFIB members Wendy and Marci Bittner from LOSHAW Thermal Technology based in Spring Grove.

Rep. Smucker highlighted a pressing concern for small businesses regarding this tax deduction, stating, "If by the end of 2025, if we don’t extend [the Small Business Deduction] or make it permanent, it really would be a massive tax hike on small businesses."

The Bittners shared their experiences with the benefits provided by this deduction over recent years. They remarked, “Specifically for the last 7 years that it has been in place, we were able to buy a work van, a brand-new work van with air conditioning, a simple need we just couldn’t afford before. We’ve given employees bonuses, and we have 100% paid healthcare premiums for employees.”

A new study by NFIB underscores the potential economic impact of making the deduction permanent. The findings suggest such action could generate 51,000 jobs annually in Pennsylvania for the first decade and subsequently increase to 99,000 new jobs each year.

Pennsylvania's small business community is urged to advocate for legislative action to ensure continuation of these benefits. Lawmakers are encouraged to pass the Main Street Tax Certainty Act before the deduction expires at the end of 2025.
