In an effort to introduce rural Pennsylvanian students to the manufacturing industry, Gov. Wolf has announced that $200,000 in funding through the Manufacturing PA Training-to-Career Program (MTTC) is being used for The Improved Milton Experience (TIME).
A Mobile MakerSpace unit is being created to introduce students to manufacturing, according to Wolf’s May 26 announcement. Funds will be used for paying the staff, purchasing equipment and supplies and providing free training. This will be for schools, libraries and community centers in rural areas.
“There are many different skills that can prepare a student for a manufacturing career,” said Wolf. “Ensuring students are exposed to these types of skills and career paths is vitally important for Pennsylvania’s future. Our economy depends on the manufacturing industry, and it is critical that we provide funding to support the industry’s future workforce.”
The four primary curriculums being covered are Circuit Vinyl Cutting and Graphic Art Designs; 3D Printing and CAD Designs; Robotic Programming; and Snap Circuits.
“The Improved Milton Experience, the non-profit organization which oversees the Milton MakerSpace, is very grateful to have received this DCED grant to promote STEAM education for youth and future career opportunities in Manufacturing,” said George Venios, executive director of The Improved Milton Experience.
Wolf launched the Manufacturing PA Initiative in October 2017. Since then the program has invested more than $16.4 million through 75 projects across Pennsylvania.
The Training-to-Career grants are for providing short-term readiness and job placement, while also helping the manufacturing industry overall. It works with local manufacturers to prepare entry-level applicants with skills needed for the job.
